Nashville Pride Festival - Saturday, June 3, 2006

Giddy Up!
Howdy Y'all. Make sure you plan some time in your day to spend with your favorite cow-folk at Nashville Pride this year. It promises to be quite the day for SMRA. In case you have been held up in the barn, the day is Saturday, June 3rd. It all starts with the parade at 12 noon, and we'll need as many members as possible to help us carry our awesome new flag into the festival. Make sure to arrive early and look for the black Jeep Wrangler.
After the parade, down at the festival we will have a mechanical bull!!! We will even take your picture on the bull and email it to ya, it'll be the best $10 (or $5 without the picture) you will spend all day! Also we will have the "Buck Me" tattoos available again this year, and will be handing out Bud Light prizes to the riders. The Festival is from 12:30-6:30, so make sure to bring your friends and get "Bucked" at pride this year!
Last, but definitely not least.... Pride is on the first Saturday of the month which means "RODEO NIGHT" at The Chute. This promises to be the best Rodeo Night of the year! Arrive early for the dance lessons at 8pm, and stay for the beer bust from 10-1.

Trailblaze to St. Louis

A Good Time Was Had By All
Trailblaze by the Bus On May 5th a contingent of SMRA members and guests headed to St. Louis for Gateway Gay Rodeo Association's first annual Rodeo! The facility was beautiful and everyone agreed that the rodeo was a big success.
Several SMRA Members volunteered to work at the rodeo. Special thanks to Ashley, Bill, Justin, Michael and Skip for showing IGRA that Smoky Mountain Rodeo Association is eager to contribute.
SMRA had two cowboys participate as contestants. KP competed in Goat Dressing and Barrel Racing and Grigsby competed in Barrel Racing. They both did an awesome job!
Watch for details for upcoming road trips! You'll want to save your vacation days!

General Membership Meetings ...

An Important Privilege of Membership
Please mark your calendars and plan to attend SMRA next General Membership Meeting scheduled for 5:30 p.m. on Saturday, June 10, 2006. This meeting will be held at TRAX (1501 Second Avenue South) and will be immediately followed by the Royalty Bash!
ARTICLE V, Section IV, Item “A” of the By-Laws, Rules of Order and Precedents of SMRA, Inc. states that “A quorum of the general membership of this Corporation shall consist of ten percent (10%) of the active General membership (has voting privileges) in good standing as certified by the Recording Secretary.”
As SMRA continues to grow, it is important that members attend meetings and participate in activities. We must have a quorum at each meeting so that we can continue to achieve our purpose of promoting the country western way of life with rodeos and other rodeo-themed events, raising money and supporting our local charities, hosting a successful convention, and making a positive mark on the community.

Letter from the President

Howdy out there Smoky's! Well things really are heating up here in the south. It looks like SMRA is going to have a presense at 3 prides this year: Clarksville, Nashville and possibly Knoxville. That's great! Now that is how you advertise. Thank you to all of you who have organized; are organizing or plan to organize any of these Pride events. In my opinion, Prides are the single most effective way to get our name out in the community.
Convention planning is coming along better than expected. Great job everyone who is working so hard on this as well. We need volunteers! We aren't done yet. Please offer what ever assistance you can. I am very proud of everyone who steps forward and helps. This includes those who offer to donate funds for things or those members who are able to take on a few extra roles. Without you all, SMRA would not be here. We must remember that. Team work! And you all know the saying, "There is no "I" in Team!" One person can't run SMRA but a group of hard- working and dedicated men and women can.
Sincerely, Justin James President, SMRA

Featured Rodeo Event ...

Team Roping!
Team Roping Hours of hard work go into the training for this event. This event is loaded with hazards, such as collisions, entanglements, and worst of all, possible loss of fingers. The team consists of two ropers and two well-trained horses. One roper is called the "header" and his or her responsibility is to catch the steer by the horns while the teammate, called the "heeler," has the responsibility of catching the steer's back legs, or heels. When the header makes the catch, he or she must wind the rope around the saddle horn, called "dallying off," and turning the steer away from himself causes the steer's heels to fly in the air for the heeler's loop to catch. When both ropers have been successful in their tasks, they must turn their horses to face the steer and pull their ropes taut.

Smoky Mountain Rodeo Association (SMRA) was seated with the International Gay Rodeo Association (IGRA) in July of 2003, becoming IGRA’s twenty- fourth member association. Currently, twenty-six such associations produce at least eighteen sanctioned rodeos each year, including International Finals. SMRA is an all-volunteer, non-profit organization that promotes the western lifestyle and the production of fundraising events with the commitment to raise funds for charitable organizations within our community. Since its inception, SMRA has raised and distributed funds for organizations that care for and seek cures for those living with HIV/AIDS, as well as Children’s Services, Animal Welfare, and other organizations that focus on social issues within our society as a whole. In 2006, SMRA is focusing it’s fundraising efforts on three 501c3 charities: Angel Heart Farm, Dream Factory and The Bianca Paige Awareness Network.
